The key detail: cedar does not kill adult moths. It works as a deterrent. Moths avoid laying eggs near the scent, and larvae exposed to high concentrations do not develop normally. The result is that your wardrobe never becomes a nursery in the first place.

How long does cedar last?
The oils sit near the surface of the wood. Over months and years, the exposed surface layer releases its scent until the concentration drops below the effective threshold.

How to refresh cedar hangers (2 minutes)
- Take the hanger outside or lay it on newspaper.
- Lightly sand the whole surface with fine sandpaper (120-180 grit). You only need to remove the top layer – a few strokes per side.
- Wipe off the dust, and optionally apply a drop of cedar oil to speed up the aroma.
- The scent returns immediately. Your nose is the test: if you can smell it, the protection is active.
Do not varnish or paint cedar hangers you want to remain moth-repellent – sealing the surface locks in the oils. If appearance matters, keep the visible faces natural and enjoy the wood’s reddish grain; cedar looks good unfinished.

- Solid wood vs veneer: only solid cedar can be sanded and refreshed. A thin cedar veneer over other wood loses its function within a year.
- Thickness and joinery: a good cedar hanger is solid at the hook and shoulder joints – these are the failure points of cheap models.
- Smooth finish: sanded smooth without varnish – the surface must stay breathable.
