“Your MOQ is 5,000 pieces but I only want to test 500.” This conversation happens between buyers and suppliers every day. Here is what MOQ actually means, why it exists, and – more usefully – how to work around it.
What MOQ really is
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is not a number the factory invented to annoy you. It is the point at which a production run becomes economically viable given:
- Machine setup and changeover – dye lots, blade changes, hook assembly lines all need setup time that is fixed regardless of order size
- Material batches – wood is purchased by the cubic meter; a tiny order still consumes a share of a batch
- Labor organization – workers are scheduled per production run
- Finishing and QC – lacquer, paint or oil processes run per batch
Below the MOQ, the factory still pays all the fixed costs but spreads them over few pieces – the price per piece rises until it stops making sense for either side.
What MOQ looks like in wooden hangers and kitchenware
Typical ranges for our industry:
| Order type | Typical MOQ |
|---|---|
| Standard model, standard finish | 1,000 – 3,000 pcs per model |
| Custom color / finish | 3,000 – 5,000 pcs |
| Laser logo (no new tooling) | 1,000 – 2,000 pcs |
| Custom shape / new tooling | 5,000 – 10,000 pcs |
| Mixed-model container | Total 10,000+ pcs, split across models |
The key word is per model: a container can almost always combine several models as long as each model meets its own minimum.
How small can your first order be?
Honestly? For a genuine factory, a trial order of 500-1,000 pieces of a standard model is usually possible – with conditions:
- You accept the standard product with minimal customization (logo only, if anything)
- The unit price is higher than at volume
- The factory treats it as a sample-run, often scheduled between bigger productions
This is a fair deal for both sides: you prove your market, the factory proves its quality, and the second order sizes up naturally.
Five ways to reduce MOQ
1. Start from the factory’s existing catalog
Their standard models are already in production for other clients – your 500 pieces can join an existing run. Custom designs cannot.
2. Combine models to reach total volume
Instead of 5,000 of one hanger, order 1,000 each of five models. Same container, broader product test.
3. Group with other buyers
Distributors and multi-brand retailers often consolidate. Some factories also accept “mixed wholesale” orders from smaller clients.
4. Accept simpler customization
Logo engraving needs no tooling. Custom shapes do. Keep the first order to logo + finish, and save full custom design for when volume justifies it.
5. Ask about sample orders and low-MOQ programs
Factories serving boutique and hotel clients often run flexible trial programs. Ours does – tell us your real target and we will tell you what is possible, rather than just quoting the catalog number.
The cost logic: MOQ vs price per piece
Roughly realistic illustration for a beech hanger:
| Quantity | Relative unit price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 500 pcs | +60-80% vs volume | sample-run economics |
| 2,000 pcs | +20-30% | small-batch |
| 5,000 pcs | baseline | efficient production |
| 20,000+ pcs | -10-15% | volume efficiency |
Buyers sometimes hunt the absolute lowest piece price and forget that a smaller trial order – even at a higher unit price – reduces their total risk by thousands of dollars. The right first order is the one you can sell out of.
FAQ
Why do trading companies quote lower MOQ than factories?
Because they aggregate orders across factories and mark up unit prices. You get flexibility but pay for it, and quality control is one step further away.
Can I mix colors/finishes within the MOQ?
Usually yes within the same model – for example natural and black hangers splitting a 2,000 piece MOQ. Each custom color may still need its own batch minimum, so confirm in writing.
Does MOQ apply to samples?
No – samples are separate, typically a few pieces at sample pricing, shipped in 7-10 days.
What if my first order succeeds?
Your reorder moves to standard MOQ pricing immediately, and the factory can plan capacity for you. This is exactly why trial programs exist.
