Step 1: Find a real manufacturer (not a middleman)
Guilin, in Guangxi province, is the historic heart of China’s wooden products industry – most serious wooden hanger factories are there. When you shortlist suppliers:
- Ask for factory proof: real photos or a live video call of the production floor.
- Check their export history: ask how many countries they ship to and request a few client references (with permission).
- Verify the address: a real factory has a physical address that matches its business registration.
- Watch for red flags: prices dramatically below the market, no factory visit allowed, vague answers about materials.

Step 2: Define your product specification precisely
Vague specifications are the #1 cause of quality disputes. Put everything in writing:
- Wood type (cedar / beech / rubberwood / bamboo) and grade
- Dimensions (length, thickness, shoulder width) – with a drawing if possible
- Finish (natural, painted, stained – specify the color code)
- Hardware (hook type, clips, notches, metal color)
- Packaging (polybag, printed sleeve, hang tag, barcode, carton specs)
- Compliance requirements (your market’s standards – e.g. EU formaldehyde limits, US Prop 65)
Step 3: Order samples – always
Never skip this step. A serious factory offers samples within 7-10 days.
- Order 3-5 samples of the models you’re considering
- Test: weight in hand, surface smoothness, clip strength, hook sturdiness
- Compare woods if unsure (cedar vs beech, for example)
- Keep the sample as your “gold standard” for the production run
Cost note: sample fees are usually deducted from your first bulk order, or free if you cover shipping.
Step 4: Understand MOQ, pricing and Incoterms
- MOQ: typically 1,000-5,000 pieces per model for wooden hangers. Flexible suppliers accept smaller trial orders – ask.
- Pricing: FOB (factory port) is standard. Add freight, insurance and duties to get your landed cost.
- Incoterms: agree clearly – FOB, CIF or EXW – so there are no surprises on who pays what.
- Currency: USD is standard; watch exchange rates when planning margins.
Step 5: Production, quality control and shipping
- Payment: typically 30% deposit, 70% before shipment (or against B/L). Never pay 100% upfront.
- Pre-production samples: confirm the exact production sample before mass production starts.
- QC inspection: use a third-party inspector (SGS, Bureau Veritas, or your own agent) for the final pre-shipment inspection – or ask for a live video check of loading.
- Timeline: production usually takes 20-40 days depending on quantity; samples 7-10 days.
- Shipping: wooden products are not fumigated like raw timber, but check your destination country’s wood packaging rules (ISPM 15 for crates/pallets).
Step 6: Build a long-term relationship
The best importers treat suppliers as partners, not one-off vendors. Share your sales forecasts, give honest feedback, and pay on time. In return you’ll get priority in busy seasons, better pricing over time, and early access to new designs.
